The Manchester Graphene Ecosystem

• Inventing new ideas is easy. • Transforming them into real technology products is hard. The Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) at the University of Manchester has done a good job of supporting innovation from inception to industrialisation. Building a high profile through years of consistent messaging it has provided the foundations for networking where academics, industrial companies, and individuals can get together to commercialise application using graphene and 2D materials. This short paper summarises their approach from initial the concept to the commercialisation.

World Future Energy Summit 2020

This Special Edition was produced for the World Future Energy summit in Abu Dhabi, January 2020. The”Abu Dhabi” edition was a collaboration between ourselves, the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre and Khalifa University of Science and Technology, This special edition of the journal references both Nobel prizewinning scientists who became famous for isolating and characterizing the wonder material that is graphene. Professor Konstantin (Kostya) Novoselov features in the section about the world’s first graphene hackathon at the GEIC. Teams of doctoral students were given the same set of resources including graphene ink, and were told to invent a useful device, make a working prototype and deliver the business pitch - all within 24 hours. The teams did just that. Kostya is mentioned here because he made a surprise visit to see what the students had created. Professor Andre Geim also features in this edition. He rarely gives interviews so it is a special treat to include this interview for the first time in this edition. Andre gives us his views of the state of the art of this rapidly evolving field and tells us about his latest work. Joining Andre in the Thought Leadership section, we have Steve Griffiths from Khalifa University of Science and Technology. Steve shares with us his view of graphene and how he sees the advanced materials agenda developing in the foreseeable future. James Baker, CEO of Graphene@Manchester is one of the highest profile people in the world of graphene. Graphene in Space

This Special Issue of the Nixene Journal is about the application of graphene technology in space and the companies that are operating in this sector. It represents curated content from the Nixene Journal between May 2018 and February 2020 The properties of graphene make it an ideally suited material for the harsh environment in space. Although to date, much of the technology is still at the research stage a number of UK companies are actively engaged in this field. In line with the current trends in graphene applications much of the work featured here is based around enhancing composites with graphene to improve their properties, though interestingly there are also experime nts in graphene based composite films for light propulsion.

GEIC Industry Showcase 2019

Summarising activity in the world of graphene and 2D materials, this Special Edition supports the Industry showcase and the Graphene engineering Innovation Centre. We report on graphene enhanced concrete, graphene nanoribbons beginning to appear in practical applications ranging from heated windscreen to spinal injury repair as well as laying the groundwork for new more powerful computers as integrated circuits can be made smaller with graphene. Other stand out work has been done in China where an artificial larynx has been made from graphene components. This wearable patch picked up movements in a person’s throat and converted this into an electrical signal that powered a loudspeaker. We also report on graphene enhanced lubricant. The lubricant oil sold out when launched on the market in South Korea. Whilst companies have announced patents, in membranes and textiles respectively. And the is collaborating on developing new graphene-based supercapacitors.

Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre Opening Event

This special issue has been created to mark the opening of the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) in Manchester, UK. This edition contains a selection of technical and business developments during 2018. The pace of advancement is astonishing, this document could easily have been twice the size and we would still not be able to fit in everything. James Baker talks about the emerging industry in terms of the graphene tipping point. This is a change in the dynamic from a technology push to a market pull. Graphene is beginning to move out of the laboratory and into real world applications. This is a view shared by many of the leaders in this field and we illustrate this with our sample of the activity from this year in this report. Graphene is starting to appear in commercial applications. The biggest deal of the year is probably the supply of graphene for the latest Huawei phone. Graphene is also being sold in volume into textiles for clothing. Early 2019 models of some Ford cars will start to roll off the production lines with graphene components. Three of the top graphene companies in the world are partners at the GEIC, working on graphene projects that will prevent fires, make concrete stronger and reduce CO2 emissions, make counterfeiting harder, make batteries better and improve the efficiency of aircraft design and manufacture.
